i was a deckhand on the Wheat King when this photo was taken - Bill Neuerberg was chief mate - he sure liked to keep her painted & clean - he gave careful consideration when choosing what colours to paint the bulkheads back aft... the Wheat King was a salty converted into a laker - i remember the old steam winches were very cool with steam billowing all over the place... when tying up & letting go, a deckhand operated the winches , taking hand signals from the mate standing at the bulwark - way more fun than most other ships equipped with electric winches and controls mounted at the gunwale/bulwark which were operated by the mate himself.
